DUBLIN—An array of new technologies driven by the digitalization trend will empower manufacturers to set foot into the digital era in 2016 and beyond, according to a new report from the market research firm Research and Markets, which identifies additive manufacturing, digital manufacturing, collaborative industrial robots, and multi-material joining as among the top 10 technologies in advanced manufacturing today. The report, “2016 Top Technologies in Advanced Manufacturing and Automation,” characterizes 2016 as a “strategic year,” in which many manufacturing companies are likely to gather information and develop strategies to help them make the best use of new technologies in their operations.

In the years following 2016, manufacturing companies will likely undergo a gradual transformation in their organizational structures and operation patterns that is influenced by digital technologies. The technology and innovation report covers what are believed to be the top 10 advanced manufacturing and automation technologies that will have highest impact in the near- and medium-term.

Among the other top 10 technologies covered in the report are agile robots, robotic exoskeletons, micro-manufacturing, composites manufacturing, unmanned underwater vehicles (UUVs), and magnetic levitation (maglev).

Key technologies were selected after critical evaluation of an exhaustive list of technologies using a proprietary selection methodology. The report assesses technologies from various aspects, such as patents, funding, applications, megatrend impact, disruptiveness, and market potential.
